African Black Mask Soap
Natural Shea Butter

The first good thing African Black Soap always has is loads of Shea Butter❤️. And for good reason.

Natural Shea Butter has an awesome reputation for how great it is for your skin! However, this presented a challenge: too much Shea butter in a soap, and the soap will not have a good lather, and will not have a hard, long lasting, consistency.

Burnt fruit

A true African Black soap will have burnt Plantains, Coconut Hulls, or another African fruit in it. The charcoal, in an unstable state, is part of the saponification process in a true African Black soap. (What most soap makers use, Sodium Hydroxide, basically does what ash water does, but is more stable.) However, the soap could turn out differently every time. Obviously we needed a more precise recipe, that would consistently turn out good results, and be awesome for your skin! ( The African Natives know their craft so well that I’m sure they do produce a consistent product, but here in America we don’t work with ash as a saponification method! )

Simple ingredients

A third major hurdle that had to be figured out was the issue of few ingredients.  Usually African Black has about 3 ingredients (Shea Butter, Palm or Coconut Oil, and Potash), whereas we wanted to include other skin-loving ingredients such as Tamanu and Argan Oils, and Dead Sea Mud. We used Matcha Green Tea for its great skin benefits, and Tea Tree Oil, as it has a great reputation for everything from teen-age skin issues to wrinkles.

We chose the name Black Mask Soap, rather than African Black Soap, because there are similarities, but also differences. Loads of Organic Natural Shea Butter and Coconut Charcoal like African Black, but with the addition of other skin loving ingredients, it’s not exactly a true African Black soap. But then after good results using it as a mask, we decided on the name Black Mask Soap. (Instructions for mask use below.)

This soap, between the Natural Shea❤️, Green Tea, Dead Sea Mud, and Tea Tree Oil, has an herbaceous “green” scent to it, and is creamy and smooth! If you love African Black Soap, or great facial soaps, you’re gonna love this soap!

Wet bar and lather well. Rub lather over face gently. Rinse well. Use morning and evening for best results.

To use as a mask soap, collect a dense lather by using less water and apply lather to face. Leave on for approximately 30 seconds, then rinse as usual. If irritation happens, discontinue use as a mask soap and wait a few days before attempting to use as a regular facial soap. It will depend on the sensitivity of your skin if this can be used as a mask or not.
